This surge in online shopping is underscored by an average expenditure of $1,300 per person during the U.S. holiday season, signaling a robust revival of the digital retail landscape. The shift in preferences is evident when compared to 2006, where only 18% considered online shopping their top destination. During the pandemic peak in 2020, this figure reached a historic high of 55%. Although it dipped to 51% in 2022, the trend has rebounded to a new high this year.

Discount offers and concerns about inflation seem to be driving this surge, impacting the preferences of specific demographics. Women aged 50 and above, who are more cautious about economic conditions, constitute a significant portion of those planning to engage in more online shopping activities this year. Despite spending less on average, this demographic contributes to the overall surge. There’s also a noteworthy increase in individuals earning less than $30,000, planning to spend $200, showcasing a diversified pattern of online shopping behavior.

For six consecutive years, Amazon has maintained its position as the preferred platform for Americans, with 74% considering it their top online shopping destination. This consistent preference reaffirms Amazon’s stronghold, presenting a formidable challenge for other retailers.
